History
Singapore was established as a colonial trading post by the British in 1813, giving it a rich history. Though you cannot go back in time, but the history of the city is well preserved in its colonial buildings and historical museums.
Culture
The prime culture attraction in Singapore is the Esplanada Theaters in the Marina Bay area. Apart from the motion pictures, it is also the home venue of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. The Bras Bsah and the Riverside areas are the colonial heart of the city and feature a number of museums. Chinatown is another popular destination, while you cannot afford to miss the Burmese Buddhist Temple in Balestier as well.
Festivals
Singapore is a city of many cultures and religions, which is why almost all well-recognized festivals from around the world are celebrated here. If you find yourself in Singapore during the New Years celebrations, Christmas, Easter, Chinese New Year, Ramadan, Eid and the Hindu festival of Diwali, you would surely witness some of the most vibrant jubilations ever. Important Singaporean festivals include the Dragon Boat Festival in the fifth Chinese calendar month, the Hungry Ghost Festival in the seventh Chinese calendar month, the Mid-Autumn Festival on the 15th of the eight month. The national day of Singapore is on August 9.
Shopping
Orchard Road is downtown Singapore, featuring the highest density of skyscrapers and malls in the city. It is also the foremost destination for shopping in Singapore, apart from Marina Bay and Bugis.
Nightlife
Singapore is a decent place for partying, though not the best in the region of course. Sentosa is the destination for tourists looking for a vibrant nightlife with a number of clubs and the Universal Studios Park. The district also features plenty of gambling attractions, apart from the casinos in the Marina Bay Sands.
Precautions
There are a few things you need to keep in mind when planning to visit Singapore. The country has very strict drug laws and regulations, so make sure you are not carrying any such item. Furthermore, when you are carrying any liquid more than 150 ml, you need to declare it in order to stay out of trouble.
