Renewing or replacing your passport can be done any time. The fee for such service is £72.50, or £81.25 using the Passport Check and Send service of the Post Office. The remaining time on your current passport will be added to your new one up to a maximum of 9 months.
It would take 3 weeks to get the passport. However, you can expedite the passport by using a different service if you need the passport urgently. Make sure to fill out the application correctly and all information provided as it could delay the release of your passport. Don’t book a travel until you receive your valid passport because it could be risky.
Make sure to replace your passport right away if it has signs of reasonable wear and tear because you may not be permitted to travel with a damaged passport. You need to renew your expired passport before you are allowed to travel.
For lost or stolen passports, you may need to attend an interview which can cause further delays in your application for a new visa.
How To Apply
If you are in the United Kingdom, there are several ways you can apply for a passport. One is by applying online, another way is through the Passport Check and Send service of the Post Office. Lastly, through Passport Adviceline through their hotline at 03002220000 or 03002220222. If you are not in the United Kingdom, there are several ways you can apply if you’re outside the UK.
Include 2 identical new photos when applying for renewal. Again, it may cause delay if you do not abide by the rules about passport photos. Countersignatures may be required on your application form and 1 of your photos as proof of your identity if either:
- Unrecognizable picture in your existing passport
- you’re replacing a lost, stolen or damaged passport
If you apply online, you can immediately track your passport application. If you applied through post, you can track your application after 3 weeks. Your new passport will be sent either through a courier or through Royal Mail Recorded Delivery. The postman will then do one of the following:
- hand you your passport if you are home
- include your passport with your other posts
- leave you a card or letter telling you where to collect your passport or how to arrange delivery. This card or letter will not tell you that the package contains your passport.
