Humans are creatures of habit. Once we find things we like, it is very hard to attract our attention to something new. This is especially true about the foods we eat. Because humans are very visual beings, just the mere appearance of a dish may turn them off, especially if it is a foreign cuisine they do not have any experience with. It’s been said that variety is the spice of life and we think people should apply that to their choices in food as well. It’s no fun eating the same thing over and over, no matter how good it is. Expand your horizons and try something new – like Thai cuisine. We’re going to tell you about five of the most popular dishes in Thai cuisine that everyone should try – at least once.
Tom Yam Goong
Tom yam goong is one of those dishes you can smell before you ever see or taste it – and that’s a good thing! It’s made from lots of smelly, delicious herbs like lemongrass, galangal and chiles that create an aromatic symphony in your nose. Overall, tom yam goong is sort of like shrimp gumbo with an Asian flare and can be eaten as an appetizer or served with rice for a whole meal.
Gang Jued
Gang jued is a culinary work of art. It is a clear broth that contains a beautiful and colorful mix of carrots, onions, cabbage, noodles, pork and tofu that has been garnished with fresh parsley. It’s healthy, it’s colorful and it perfectly compliments any other Thai dishes that you can think of.
Kai Jiew Moo Saap
If you thought everything about Thai food was healthy and diet friendly, you were wrong. Sure, they do use a lot of vegetables in their cooking, but they also stray off the beaten path and partake in some Thai-style comfort food as well. Kai jiew moo saap is one example of that comfort food. It is made from scrambling eggs together with soy sauce, fish sauce and some minced pork for good measure. The mixture is then deep fried into a Thai-style omelet that can be served over rice or eaten alone.
Khao Phad (Fried Rice)
Khao Phad (fried rice) is one of those dishes that is instantly recognizable as being Asian. Although it is a staple in Asian cuisine, there is more to fried rice than meets the eye and the dish can be prepared any way you like. You can order it with or without meat (shrimp or chicken) and it already comes with a slew of vegetables mixed in. It’s all held together by a secret ingredient….an egg.
Moo Dad Diew
Moo dad diew is one of those dishes that will send your taste buds into overdrive. It is made from small pieces of pork that has been marinated in a dark soy sauce and then deep fried to lock in the flavors. It is served with a chili sauce made from green onions and, you guessed it, it does taste super good over rice as well as by itself.
